The line was originally surveyed by George Nobel Fell, the son of John Barraclough Fell who invented the Fell system. This survey was for a steam-operated railway using the Fell centre rail for both propulsion and braking, and the scheme was approved by Tynwald in 1888 but not built. In 1895 the Snaefell Mountain Railway Association (SMRA) revived the plans, and adopted the route of the earlier survey. As the line was built entirely on land leased by the association there was no need for statutory powers, and the line was constructed very quickly and opened on 20 August 1895

SMR Car 3
The 3rd car built for the line. On march 30th 2016 at approximately 2:30pm smr car 3 ran away from the summit and derailed above the bungalow station the car suffered server damage and was smashed to bits happily though no crew or passengers where on board at the time. Update April 2016 investigation into the incident still ongoing although early signs suggest that it was a brake failure.
SMR Car 4
The fourth car built for the line. In 2015 to celebrate snaefell mountain railways 120th anniversary it was fitted with lights on the side to become the first ever snaefell mountain railway illuminated tram.
SMR Car 5
This was the fifth car built for the line.
SMR Car 6
This was the last car built for the line except one which was number 7 maria this was used to transport the coal up to the power station just below the bungalow.
